Gold and silver completed their first constructive weekly response to the tightening shock. Reuters reported spot gold at $4,390.11/oz at 2:14 p.m. EDT, up 1.2% on the session and 1% for the week, while U.S. gold futures settled at $4,424.90/oz. Spot silver rose 2.3% to $66.70/oz. The Wall Street Journal separately reported front-month gold settling at $4,385.90/oz and silver at $66.556/oz. The Reuters and WSJ gold futures figures refer to different contract conventions; neither is blended or used to manufacture a single close.

The rebound occurred despite a dollar index near 100.19, the nominal 10-year Treasury yield around 5.00%, a same-session 10-year real Treasury yield of 2.68%, and a 55% market-implied probability of another Fed hike in October. That resilience improves the tactical picture, but the macro hurdle remains too high for a bull-trend upgrade.

Tactical and Secular Probabilities

Horizon Bull Base Bear
Tactical, 1–6 months 34% 44% 22%
Secular, 12–24 months 60% 27% 13%

The tactical bull probability rises again because gold and silver posted weekly gains even as the Fed tightened, the dollar remained strong, and Treasury yields stayed near cycle highs. That is evidence of demand absorption, not yet evidence of a restored trend.

The secular distribution remains positively skewed because central-bank accumulation, record gold ETF holdings, fiscal-financing pressure, and silver's structural deficit remain intact.

What Changed

Gold extended Thursday's repair and reached a one-week high. Reuters reported spot gold at $4,390.11/oz and U.S. gold futures settling at $4,424.90/oz.

Source: Reuters, 2026-09-18.

Silver strengthened more than gold, rising 2.3% to $66.70/oz and completing a positive week.

Source: Reuters, 2026-09-18.

The macro backdrop did not turn dovish. The dollar index finished around 100.19, the 10-year Treasury yield around 5.00%, and traders raised the probability of another October Fed hike to 55%.

Oil relief helped metals: Brent settled at $103.87/bbl, down nearly 1%, reducing some immediate inflation pressure even while Middle East supply risk remains.

Macro / Flow / Positioning Evidence

Monetary-policy state

CURRENT STATE — scored. The Federal Reserve target range remains 3.75%–4.00% following the September 16 increase. The Fed also signaled that additional tightening may be needed.

Sources: Federal Reserve, 2026-09-16; Reuters, 2026-09-18.

Real-rate environment

CURRENT SAME-SESSION DATA — scored. U.S. Treasury Real Yield Curve-derived market-close data put the 10-year real Treasury yield at 2.68% on September 18, up 7 basis points on the session. This remains exceptionally restrictive for non-yielding metals.

Source: U.S. Treasury Real Yield Curve-derived market-close data, 2026-09-18.

Rates expectations

CURRENT — scored. CME FedWatch pricing cited by Reuters showed a 55% probability of another U.S. rate hike at the October meeting.

Source: Reuters/CME FedWatch, 2026-09-18.

U.S. dollar

The dollar index was approximately 100.19 late Friday after reaching a more-than-seven-week high earlier in the session. The dollar remains an active headwind even though metals rose through it.

ETF and fund flows

The latest valid monthly World Gold Council evidence remains strongly supportive: August global physically backed gold ETFs attracted $18 billion, and holdings rose 121 tonnes to a record 4,189 tonnes.

Source: World Gold Council, 2026-09-09, covering August 2026.

Near-term fund-flow evidence is less clean. Broad risk funds experienced substantial withdrawals during the latest week as inflation and rate concerns intensified, while gold's price action suggests investment demand remains resilient. The monthly gold ETF evidence therefore remains supportive but is not treated as proof of accelerating current-week inflows.

Sources: Reuters/LSEG Lipper, 2026-09-18; World Gold Council, 2026-09-09.

Central-bank and reserve demand

Latest valid periodic evidence remains strongly supportive for gold. China continued adding gold to official reserves in August, while broader World Gold Council data show continued official-sector accumulation.

Sources: People's Bank of China / SAFE, August 2026 data; World Gold Council, September 2026.

CFTC positioning

The September 18 CFTC-derived weekly release covering positions through September 15 shows gold speculative net longs falling by 2,488 contracts to 137,060. Silver speculative net longs were 12,632 contracts. Gold remains meaningfully net long but is not showing the type of fresh speculative crowding associated with bull-excess.

Physical supply and demand

Reuters reported Indian physical gold demand remained subdued as buyers waited for lower prices, while Chinese premiums were steady amid robust investment demand.

The latest Silver Institute annual outlook continues to forecast a sixth consecutive silver-market deficit in 2026 of approximately 46.3 million ounces, with mine production broadly flat.

Fiscal and Treasury financing

The 10-year nominal Treasury yield ended near 5.00% after another week of severe global bond-market pressure. Reuters noted that large borrowers face a higher-rate environment as inflation risk, government borrowing needs, and global central-bank tightening reinforce one another.

Source: Reuters, 2026-09-18.

For metals this remains two-sided: high real financing costs are tactically adverse, while persistent fiscal stress and elevated sovereign borrowing costs strengthen the longer-horizon monetary-hedge argument.

Trend & Confirmation

Scored status: UNAVAILABLE.

The v0.4 rule requires attributable September 18 U.S. closing data for GDX, GDXJ, SIL, and SILJ. A complete four-ETF same-session close set could not be reliably verified from named sources. Partial or reconstructed values are excluded.

Bullion evidence improved materially. Gold finished the week higher despite the Fed hike and silver outperformed with a 3.1% weekly gain on the Wall Street Journal front-month measure.

Source: Wall Street Journal, 2026-09-18.

Trend conclusion: correction remains in force, but stabilization now has two consecutive sessions of evidence.

Silver confirmation: positive at the bullion level; miner confirmation unavailable.

Failed-breakout warning: reduced but still active. Gold has not yet demonstrated a durable recovery through the August reference area, and the macro environment remains restrictive.

Excess & Distribution Monitor

Excess & Distribution Risk: 24/100.

Excess-risk basis: +7 record August ETF holdings, +5 positive gold futures positioning, +6 two-day silver acceleration, +5 elevated absolute bullion prices, +5 renewed weekly momentum, -4 multi-week correction = 24.

January 2026 similarity: 19/100.

January-similarity basis: +6 exceptional ETF demand, +5 renewed silver leadership, +4 positive futures positioning, +5 elevated bullion prices, +3 two-day upside acceleration, -4 no verified miner blow-off = 19.

The immediate issue is still trend repair rather than blow-off excess. A rapid continuation toward prior highs accompanied by accelerating ETF flows and miner leadership would change that quickly.

Key Levels

Only observed, attributable references are used.

Market Observed reference Source

Brent settlement $103.87/bbl Reuters, 2026-09-18

The $4,563/oz August month-end remains the most useful observed gold recovery reference. A sustained move toward and through it while silver confirms and real yields/dollar pressure ease would support an upgrade. Failure below it with renewed yield pressure would reinforce correction.

Alternative Opportunity

No clearly superior liquid-market opportunity is identified.

TIPS remain attractive as a defensive alternative because real yields are historically high, but duration risk remains meaningful with a 55% probability of another October Fed hike. Bitcoin rallied above $80,000 Friday, but that rebound does not offer clearly superior risk-adjusted asymmetry relative to waiting for confirmation in metals.

Sources: U.S. Treasury Real Yield Curve-derived data, 2026-09-18; Wall Street Journal, 2026-09-18.

Action Implied

The independent call remains correction, with direction stabilizing.

The evidence improved for a second consecutive session. Gold and silver absorbed the first Fed hike since 2023, a dollar above 100, and a 10-year nominal yield around 5%, yet still posted weekly gains. Silver's relative strength is especially constructive. This is stronger evidence than a one-day oversold bounce.

It is still insufficient for bull-trend. Real yields remain exceptionally high, another October hike is now slightly more likely than not, and required miner confirmation is unavailable. The correct posture is to recognize repair without front-running the regime change.

A bull-trend upgrade becomes materially more plausible if gold sustains recovery toward the $4,563/oz August month-end, silver continues to lead, real yields/dollar pressure ease, and GDX/GDXJ/SIL/SILJ confirm. Conversely, failure of the two-day rebound with renewed pressure from real yields would reassert correction.

For staged de-risking on a future advance, do not require a retest of old highs. If gold approaches or exceeds the August reference while miners fail to confirm, ETF flows fail to reaccelerate, futures crowding rises sharply, or silver becomes vertically extended, begin staged reductions before waiting mechanically for the prior peak.

Changelog

Methodology v0.4: replaced blanket no-carry-forward logic with frequency-aware freshness; split policy state, real rates, and rates expectations; retained strict same-session market/miner requirements; and preserved available-weight scoring.
